Become a volunteer
Imagine what life would be like if you were unable to read or write, even at a basic level. Many adults in Christchurch don’t have to imagine this scenario, they are living it!
Since 1977 the Adult Reading Assistance Scheme (ARAS) has been working with adults to provide free literacy and numeracy assistance. This service is made possible by volunteer tutors (currently numbering more than 60) who give of their time to undergo training at ARAS in order to provide tutoring on a one-to-one basis or to small groups.
ARAS volunteers know the benefit of assisting someone to learn to read and write and have witnessed the incredible difference their work makes to people’s self-esteem, work opportunities, community participation, and personal relationships.
It is rewarding and challenging to be part of a humanitarian, and not-for profit organisation. ARAS has changed the lives of hundreds of people over the years of its existence, by empowering people to read and write. It relies on Mahi-Aroha – volunteer hours and could not do the good work it does if it was not for the good will of many people.
We would love to hear from you if you feel you may have some time available to offer voluntary support to our organisation. Please contact us to discuss how you may be able to assist us.
