  • ARAS has a long history with adult literacy, having provided voluntary tutoring services in Christchurch and North Canterbury  for 37 years, as well as workplace services for 22 years. ARAS began in 1977 as a pilot scheme initiated by the Canterbury WEA (Workers Educational Association), with 8 volunteer tutors and 8 students.

    ARAS Workplace, which aims to be self-funding,  was established in 1992 to provide assistance to those in work, including apprentices in a variety of industries
    ARAS became an Incorporated Society in 2001 and is one of 45 member schemes (poupou) of Literacy Aotearoa which is based in Auckland.
