History

  • Literacy Christchurch has a long history with adult literacy, having provided voluntary tutoring services in Christchurch and North Canterbury  for over 40 years, as well as workplace services for more than 25 years. ARAS began in 1977 as a pilot scheme initiated by the Canterbury WEA (Workers Educational Association), with 8 volunteer tutors and 8 students.

ARAS became an Incorporated Society in 2001 and changed its name to Literacy Christchurch in 2016.  Our new name better reflects the breadth of our services and our membership of Literacy Aotearoa, the national federation.

What Others Say

“If I see a new book, I now feel confident enough to buy it and sit down and read it. Whereas before I couldn't read it, let alone pronounce the words, I now have a love and passion to discover new words ... I don't give up. Reading is the key knowledge to everything"   Michael
